During the war years of 1939-1945, a total of 80,000 girls were recruited to the Women’s Land Army and the Women’s Timber Corps.  The country relied heavily on these girls, from all walks of life, to produce the food and timber essential for Britain whilst most of the eligible men were away serving in the Armed Forces. 

In the author’s words: It has been a pleasure to record the memories of these incredible women who have, at long last, had their efforts formally recognised albeit some 60 years after the end of the war.  I would also like to remember those who passed on before that recognition was made at the end of 2008. 

I hope you enjoy reading these many varied memories as much as I enjoyed meeting and talking with these proud ladies, all of whom are now over 80 years of age.  My work has been concentrated around those who were mainly connected to the counties of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire although I’m sure many of the accounts would be similar throughout Britain.  For all the years that have passed their memories of that time seem only slightly dimmed and they still possess the great sense of humour that must have been so helpful in seeing them through the sometimes very harsh conditions, during those dark and dangerous times.
