John Cotton was born December 4th 1584 in Derby, a town then comprising 3,000 residents, in the heart of Britain?s Midlands. He was educated at The Derby Grammar School and went on to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1598. Interestingly many of the issues the mature Cotton would confront both in Boston,Lincolnshire, and Boston, Massachusetts, were present in embryo in his interaction with Perkins at Cambridge. Cotton continued his studies in Emmanuel College, Cambridge 1603-1612.
In April 1612, the Church and the Town of Boston, Lincolnshire, were looking for a new pastor and quickly! Thomas Woole had resigned and the newly appointed Benjamin Alexander yealded up his new job. The men of the Corporation of Boston were sent to Cambridge to provide the borough of Boston with a pastor and on 5th July 1612 John Cotton was elected.
Whilst there are many good books available examining the history of the Christian Church in the UK and of the Puritan struggle. This is the first full-length study of John Cotton who from 1612-1633 served as the pastor to St Botolph’s Church in Boston, Lincolnshire where he established himself as one of the most eloquent and influential puritan clergy in the early seventeenth century.
