Crimson Skies
£3.50 – £12.50
Description
An autobiographical account by Charlie Framp of life in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, from the 1920s for a working boy. Born in 1922 in the village of Ashby in north Lincolnshire almost in the shadow of the steelworks.
He then describes how the Second World War sweeps him up into the chaos and confusion of those days with a most graphic account of himself as a young soldier briefly stationed at Sutton Bridge aerodrome then in North Africa and Italy (Monte Cassino in particular).
He concludes with his return to Scunthorpe to become a working man in the steel works and eventually a shop steward.
Lord Murray (formerly as Len Murray, General Secretary of the TUC) writes in the Foreword ‘… this impressive book … I have never read a more gripping account of the war as experienced by a private soldier … It was his innate belief in fairness … that led him into active trade unionism … We are all in debt to this English infantryman and shop steward both for what he did and for his account of it.’
