Description

The thirteenth booklet in The Survey of Lincoln’s series and examines the area closely associated with the Southern High Street, bounded at the north by High Bridge and the south by South Park, extending west to the river and east by Sincil dyke.

The work in this volume focuses upon the buildings and structures with the neighbourhood, ranging from the Roman period to the later 20th C.  This part of the city has played a vital part in accommodating its workers over time.  Employment has been provided in a variety of occupations, in mills, workshops, retail and wholesale businesses and railway-related activities.  There is also evidence of the district’s schools, places of worship and associated buildings examined within.

The various chapters (including those of The Lincoln Cooperative Society, Napoleon Place, Great Gowts, Boultham Hall and St Mark’s Station) reveal how an exploration of the neighbourhood’s buildings are structures can shed light on the social, economic and cultural lives of its inhabitants.

This is a companion volume to the Survey of Lincoln’s first neighbourhood publication Wigford: Historic Lincoln South of the River also available through this site.
