Slicing through the Fenland the A1073 is a corridor through time – a portal from the past.  From the post-Roman silts to the north, near Spalding, the road traverses claylands, the peats of the fen edge and finally rises up on to solid ground near Eye.  The landscapes and archaeological sites the A1073 passes through each have their story to tell – stories of travellers traversing the wet places by any means possible and, most remarkably, of hardy settlers, living in and exploiting the rich pickings of the wetland.
