Description
Growing up in Guernsey during the Occupation years was an exciting time for young Herbert Winterflood, who was 11 years old and a pupil of the Boys’ Intermediate School. He recalls that there was a constant air of danger and uncertainty which many young people found strangely fascinating.
Herbert lived with his family in St Peter Port and went on to become a pupil at Le Vaubelets College. Later he secured a job working for Bill Green at his motorcycle repair shop but his early Occupation years had made their mark and would lead to a lifetime interest in those wartime experiences viewed from the eyes of an adolescent. Chapters include ‘Partisans will be shot’; ‘Our Spies are caught’; ‘Shortages become a fact of life’; ”Mines, candles and curfews’; ‘Hitler threatens death penalty for islanders’
Herbert is married to Ruby and they have two children and four grandchildren and this was his first major publication and one he says he has longed to see in print.
