The first half of the 17th century was not only a time of importance in the history of Boston in the Lincolnshire Fens but a time of considerable importance in the history of Britain and the world.  Boston, as a major East Coast port, a gateway for the trade with Europe and a hot bed of religious dissent had a greater significance than had perhaps been recognised.
