Banking in Boston

Description
History of Boston Series. No. 14 – Published in 1976. This is a First Edition.
Steven N Davis was born in Birmingham in 1949. His aim here is largely to trace the progress of private and joint stock banking in and around Boston, and to the commercial fortunes of Boston itself. First, however, so that no part of this rather technical subject becomes too confusing, I will describe the origins of banking, the main types of bank, and the relevant political and economic background to banking in the nineteenth century.
The first bank in Boston was that of William Garfitt and Son and was founded in 1754. William was a corn-merchant and shipper; born in 1731, he lived to the age of 82. This bank was passed down through the family until in 1891 when it was then amalgamated with the Capital and Counties Bank. Among others was Gee and Co which was founded in 1783 and remained until 1874. This booklet attempts to unify the scant historical material that survived and was still available in the 1970s.
Please note this book (first edition) is now rare, and though shows the markings of age, it is brand new and all pages are in very good condition.
