Description

Who was Captain Christopher Newport? What part did he play in the founding of the Jamestown Colony in 1607? What happened to him after Jamestown? We hope that you enjoy our account of the life of this extraordinary sea-captain who was one of the most successful of Queen Elizabeth’s privateers, led the first fleet to Jamestown, ensured that the colony was supplied and then started a new career as a Captain with the East India Company.

The team who together produced this book are from year 6 of the Mayflower and Holy Family Primary Schools, Tower Hamlets.  These two schools serve the multi-ethnic community of London’s Docklands and together with the East Meets West project have explored the story of a sailor who lived in Limehouse in the 17th century.

This book is the fourth in the American Roots in English Soil (ARIES) series to be written with schools.  The Project helps schools and communities in the East of England to research their links with early American history.  John Haden is a writer, lecturer and independent adviser to school and a former headteacher.
