Lost Lincolnshire country houses Vol 3

Description

This volume is devoted solely to Bayons Manor, the romantic ‘mock medieval’ house built by Charles Tennyson D’eyncourt, Uncle of the poet Alfred Tennyson, and its publication in 2008 was planned to coincide with the centenary of the poet’s death.  Most of the material used comes from the Tennyson D’eyncourt deposit at the Lincolnshire Archives, a vast collection of many thousands of letters and supported by many drawings, maps and photographs.  We have kept the account of the Tennyson family brief, as it will be dealt with in more detail in a future volume of ‘Lincolnshire Country Houses and their families’.

The Splendour falls on castle walls

And snowy summits old in story:

The long light shakes across the lakes,

And the wild cataract leaps in glory.

Blow, bugle blow, set the wild echoes flying,

Blow, bugle; answer echoes, dying, dying, dying, dying….

                                     Alfred Tennyson
