Lincoln Castle hosts special WW1 event this weekend

Written on Thursday 4th August 2016

Find out more about your military mementoes

First World War experts will be on hand to help visitors discover the stories behind their mementoes at a military memorabilia roadshow at Lincoln Castle, 6-7 August, 10am – 4.30pm.

The roadshow continues a summer of commemorations and special events in honour of the First World War and the Battle of the Somme centenary.

Jon Hogan, public engagement manager, says:

"Bring your own military mementoes, medals, photographs, uniform and badges along to get an insight from expert historians.

"We've had over 200,000 people visit Poppies: Wave at Lincoln Castle and had such a huge reaction to our Battle of the Somme centenary events. People want to engage with our local and national military history and the military memorabilia roadshow is a chance to make that more personal with an insight into the history behind your own precious mementoes."

Experts from different fields will be on hand over the weekend, based at the heritage skills centre in the grounds of Lincoln Castle:

• Conservation experts can advise you about looking after and storing objects

• Lincolnshire Archives can help you research your family history

• Lincolnshire Remembrance project will be there and hoping to speak to anyone with interesting stories that they can record for an oral history archive of Lincolnshire.

The event is part of a series of commemorative events associated with the Poppies: Wave sculpture by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper, at Lincoln Castle. The tour of the sculpture has been organised by 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary.
