The author, Ray Bell, was born in 1930, in a one-up, one-down, farm labourer’s cottage in Eastgate, within a stone’s throw of the main entrance to the Showground at Heckington. One of his earliest memories was as a 4-year old sitting on his father’s shoulders watching the bike racing at Heckington Show. That was the start of a lifetime’s interest in cycling and the Show.
Ray has been actively involved in the Show as a racing cyclist and an exhibitor in the Handicraft Section since the Show was resurrected after the end of WW2 and the writing of this book his ambition. Having always wanted to write the ‘follow up’ to Charles Pinchbeck’s history of the first 125 years of the Show.
