Donington boy escapes an industrial meat mincer

Written on Wednesday 17th April 2013

A BRAVE young boy hada lucky escape after his arm became trapped in an industrial meat mincer.

Emergency serviceswere called to six-year-old George L'Estrange's house in Donington, by his dad,Henry, after his six-year-old boy had got his right arm stuck in the machine.

"I called 999and the man on the end of the phone gave me advice on making George ascomfortable as possible, while waiting for the ambulance and fireservice."  Two fire crews fromBoston and Donington, which accompanied the ambulance, worked tirelesslyalongside the nurses and surgeons at the hospital to try to remove theindustrial, stainless steel L-shaped mincer from George's arm.  Using all fire service equipment available, including an electric saw, a pedal cutter, and specialist cutting and spreadingtools, they still could not free right-handed George.

The teams were thenforced to look elsewhere for equipment to help them to free the boy's arm.

Local tradesman DannyRoberts of TFM Supplies in Boston, opened up his shop especially for the crew, and gave two different sizes of angle grinder for use.  Using an angle grinder was fraught withcomplications ? causing sparks in an area where oxygen was in use, plus the useof tools in extremely close proximity to George's skin.  For four-and-a-half hours, firefighters, anaesthetists, surgeons, paramedics and nurses worked tirelessly to freeGeorge.  He was then transferred to Derbyhospital where he had nine operations in the specialist hand unit.

Technical CFP managerat Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, Keiron Davey said: "George was sobrave.  Despite having obviously painfulinjuries, he remained completely calm throughout the process. He only criedwhen he was given an anaesthetic injection.

"This rescue wasan excellent example of firefighters utilising all their skills and knowledgeto the absolute supreme degree ? thinking outside the box, adapting andimprovising.  There were someprofessionally calculated high risks taken at times and this resulted in anexcellent outcome.  At one time I counted15 people around George's hospital bed. Everyone played a crucial part ? fromnurses filling syringes with saline, to assisting in reducing sparks and dustwhilst cooling the metal. The surgical team, the anaesthetist, the paramedic ?the list goes on. It was truly good, professional teamwork."

George lost hisfinger and had numerous operations to complete skin grafts and reattachtendons, but is now at home recovering.
