Lancaster Bomber flypast at Woodhall Spa today
At the heart of Bomber Command 70 years ago, Lincolnshire will be at the heart of the commemorations this week.
Todaymarks 70 years since 19 Lancaster bombers took off from a runway inLincolnshire to carry out a daring nightime raid on Germany during World WarII.
Carryinga revolutionary weapon, the Bouncing Bomb, developed by Dr Barnes Wallis, theraid destroyed the Eder and M?hne dams.
TheSorpe dam was also damaged, but remained intact. A fourth target, the Ennepe,was attacked but was not damaged. Halfof the pilots did not return from the May 1943 mission. Of 133 men, 53 werekilled and three crash survivors were taken prisoner. Today, only three ofthose involved survive.
